Reports have it that the United States President, Donald Trump, has charged President Muhammadu Buhari, to chase out Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa Province, ISWAP, from Nigeria’s territories. In his congratulatory message on Nigeria’s 59 years of independence, the US President told Buhari to do all he could to chase out Boko Haram and ISWAP from Nigeria.
Trump, whose message was routed through the US Embassy in Abuja said: “On behalf of the American people, I extend our warmest greetings and congratulate you on the 59th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence.” Nigeria is among our strongest partners in Africa.
“We share common goals of expanding trade and growing our economic relationship. We are allies in the global battle against terrorism, and we want to see Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa driven out of the region and other insurgencies like them dismantled.
“The United States welcome efforts by Your administration to diversify opportunities for your talented, creative and hardworking people to the benefit of both our countries, Africa, and the world.
“I am pleased that following our meeting last year, our vice presidents are also building on our longstanding history of cooperation. I wish the people of Nigeria continued success as you mark another year of independence.”
Daily Nigerian Horn would want to thank President Trump and all American people for the concern over the security situation in Nigeria. While acknowledging that terrorist activities have assumed global dimension, we would rather advise President Buhari to hearken to the advice of his fellow President. Not only that, the Nigerian President must realise that he cannot fight the battle against insurgents alone and must therefore seek the assistance of other countries who have similar crises to contend.
No doubt, Nigeria needs peace to develop, and this is while the advice and concerns of the American President must be of utmost importance to this government and Nigerians as a whole. There is no need playing the ostrich that all is well.
President Buhari must accept the reality that all is not well with the country and take urgent steps to stop the tide.
This is the time to assemble all arsenals to confront these Islamic fundamentalists before they sink the entire country.
