Yesterday, 7th August, 2019, the Imo state governor, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha swore-in his new commissioners.
They were earlier cleared by the Imo State House of Assembly. The elaborate ceremony which took place at the Ahiajoku Convention Centre, witnessed a large crowd of well wishers, stakeholders and other government appointees.
Addressing the commissioners, the governor charged them to live above board and bring their wealth of experience into the Rebuild Imo project.
Daily Nigerian Horn would like to commend governor Ihedioha for selecting credible and capable men and women as Commisssioners.
No doubt, the task before the new commissioners is not only daunting but calls for commitment from them.
It is stating the obvious that the task of rebuilding the state is an arduous one as the state is witnessing various socio-political and economic challenges.
There are several issues begging for attention. There is the perennial flooding of the state capital, dilapidated road network, payment of workers salaries and pensioners, etc.
There is also the pressing need to involve all Imolites to key in to government projects and programmes.
This is where the governor’s charge to the new commissioners is vital.
Not only that they must live above board, the commissioners who are experienced technocrats, must ensure that ministries assigned to them are working once more.
There is no gainsaying the fact that the Imo state civil service is in a state of comatose and will need committed leaders to revitalize them.
One way of doing this is to ensure discipline among the workers, punish late coming and equally encourage mutual communications between them and the workers. Another challenge is the issue of Treasury Single Account, TSA, introduced by the governor.
The commissioners must adhere to this regime change and ensure compliance from their staff.
There should be no room for corruption; laziness and lack of commitment that had characterized the civil service.
Having said that, we want to congratulate the commissioners for their merited appointments and equally remind them that uneasy bears the head that wears the crown.
Rebuilding Imo is a serious business and all hands must be on deck to make sure it did not fail. Welcome on board.
