Reports have it that the Civic Technology Organization, BudgIT, said Constituency Projects costing about #270 billion are lying uncompleted or poorly implemented across the country.
The projects were nominated by federal lawmakers between 2015 and 2019, the organization said in a statement signed by it’s Tracks Head, Ilevbaoje Uadamen.
He also drew attention to “wasteful empowerment projects” in the 2019 Zonal Intervention Projects, nominated by members of the National Assembly.
He condemned alleged poor service delivery in the country, noting that zonal intervention projects accounted for #58billion of the N100billion budgeted for Constituency Projects in the country. He alleged that these projects are practically used as “political benefits to the lawmakers”. He added: ”
The lack of citizen inclusion in the nomination of Zonal Intervention Projects has led to an escalating number of abandoned projects across the country, Tracks research has shown.
Between 2015 to 2019, projects worth #270 billion are either left incomplete or poorly implemented, despite the huge amount of funds allocated for capital expenditure yearly “. We are saddened by this report.
Daily Nigerian Horn believes that constituency projects are meant to ameliorate the suffering of the masses and hence the lawmakers ought to take it seriously.
Having said that, we want to call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to do the needful by not only monitoring these projects but bringing to book those lawmakers who has enriched themselves through the constituency projects.
Doing so will act as a deterrent to others thereby ensuring that funds are used for the purpose in which it was meant.
