For the past days, the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, popularly known as the Shi’a has carried massive protests in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja the calling for the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
The protest which turned bloody in the loss of lives including a serving Corps member attached to the Channel’s Television, Precious Owolabi and a Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations at the FCT Command, Umar Usman, equally saw the arrest of scores of the sect members by the Police.
El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in custody despite several court directives for their release on bail.
Recently, President Muhammadu Buhari said only the court can release the Islamic teacher.
Daily Nigerian Horn is of the opinion that the security situation in the country calls for urgent attention. It is no gainsaying the fact that the nation has witnessed several protests which had often resulted in casualties.
We join other well-meaning Nigerians including the Nigeria Union of Journalists to demand for a thorough investigation to ascertain those responsible for the death of 23year old Precious Owolobi and bring such person to account for their crime.
It is in this wise that we call on the Federal Government led by President Buhari to intervene before the current Shi’a protest enveloped the nation.
The president cannot deny the fact that things are getting out of hand. He must exercise the courage to release the Islamic leader and his wife for proper treatment.
Having said that, we call on the Shi’a members to stop the protest to allow for proper dialogue. Engaging in violent protests cannot resolve the issue.
We must give peace a chance.
