The Chairman, Abia State Amalgamated Tricycle Operators Association, (ASATOA), Umuahia Zone says the limited operational time of tricycles in the state’s capital territory stagnated the economy of the state.
Cmrd. Nduka Awomukwu, during an interaction with Aljazirah Nigeria, weekend lamented that the baning of Keke operation in the state did not only drastically affect the operators but also commuters, as night life he said, was put on hold.
Cmrd Awomukwu amidst ecstasy expressed his profound gratitude to Abia Governor, Dr. Okezie Victor Ikpeazu whom he explained did not turn deaf ears to their appeal to lift the ban on the time of operation, describing him as a listening Governor.
“We thank the Governor because he’s a listening Governor. The limited time affected not even only the operators but both the commuters, because businesses were shut down. Immediately it is 5 O’clock, everybody starts rushing to go, it affected the economy of the state”, he bemoaned, but admitted that the extension of Keke movement to the stroke of 9pm would in no doubts resuscitate the night life of the area, and at the same time promote state’s economy.
“Ever before lifting the ban, we had a meeting with him and we pleaded with him to lift the ban. And he made a request that we should go for security number under bio-metric capturing and we’re about starting it”.
However, he regretted the nefarious activities of some hoodlums, used the means to perpetrate crime against the general public, which according to him had resulted in the restriction of night movement of Keke (tricycle), in Umuahia, while insisting that none of the genuine members of the association would give into such anti-security acts.
It could be recalled that Abia state government had in April restricted tricycles in the state from operating between the hours of 7pm.
Meanwhile, some of the operators who spoke to our Correspondent narrated their ordeals consequent on the order by government, as they were unable to actualise their daily targets, whereas some said they were not in the least affected by the limited in the time of operation, hence their time of operation elapses at 6pm daily.
