President Ihiagwa Town Management Council (ITMC) and Patron Association of President Generals of Owerri Federal Constituency autonomous communities, Engr Emeka Udokporo has decried the inability of Owerri people to pursue group agenda.
The community leader made the observation in the United States while delivering a Keynote address at the occasion of the World Owerri People’s Congress which held in Charlotte, USA at the weekend.
Speaking, he lamented that personal interest had taken the place of group goals which should benefit a greater number of the people. In his words, ‘many a times, group interest is benched behind making way for individual interest to shoot ahead, this often dips group effort, encouraging Individual aspiration and ultimately leading to fragmentation of the strength of constituency electoral base and efforts.’’
Continuing, the entrepreneur advised,‘we need to develop and sustain a strong, united and group purpose driven agenda for Owere socio-political and economic mobilization for progress and development. In this light especially, the current WOPC leadership has taken the path of glory to build a virile grassroots platform for the social mobilization of Nde Owere through strategic participation with the Association of President-General of Owerri Federal Constituency (APOFEC).’’
He further noted that this strategic alliance will create a community level based far growing foot-soldiers and active stakeholders with shared-visions to promote Owere agenda at the grassroots level.
Udokporo expressed strong hope that the partnership between the two groups can be a veritable tool to achieving any development oriented project in Owerri drawing from the success of mobilizing the people to speak with one voice during elections and also a successful football contest organized by APOFEC.
The philanthropist further hinted that the success of the proposed STEM scholarship will fly on the wings of this same partnership. In an earlier interaction with Daily Nigerian Horn shortly before the World Convention, the President of WOPC, Mr. Uzoma Iheancho had hinted that his group is planning to institute a STEM scholarship (Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine) for students of Owerri federal constituency.
Lending support to the scholarship scheme Udokporo reminded the audience that in the time past their forebears had pooled resources together to train their brilliant children in the Universities, home and abroad.
He expressed gratitude that the presence of eight higher institutions alone in Owerri Federal Constituency provides the needed leverage to actualize the scholarship dream.
Hear him, ‘The main goal of the scholarship scheme will be deliberately raising a generation of scholars, who will be absorbed in these institutions and beyond. If we had been thinking and acting strategically, this scheme ought to have been in place many years ago, and our people would have been in good number in these institutions.’’
The Speaker while commending members of the group for their magnanimity in organizing medical out reaches he urged to close ranks and organize themselves as a group to achieve greater impact.
He further appealed to secure their support in managing refuse dumps that had overwhelmed the communities and impeding their health conditions.
‘’The refuse poses a serious health risk to our people. Indeed, we run the risk of an epidemic in our communities. Therefore, we need to act on this urgently as chemicals from this refuse dumps sip into the ground and pollute the underground water. Our people now depend on untreated borehole water. Some of these borehole sources are not located far from the refuse dumps. I’m advocating that every community should have a designated dump site located away from our living area’’, he advised.
